Reading I:
Here is the news: Thousands of children have been trapped in civil war. All alone, their parents killed, they had to choose between the dangers of slavery to the north, or a near suicidal march eastward into a foreign land.

We tried to keep hidden from the militia. Whenever they would see any of us, they would try to grab us and kill us.

I didn't know where I was going. I just wanted to find a place where there was no enemy. We kept running, day after day, week after week!

I was afraid of the rivers, having to cross the big rivers.

Mostly I was afraid of the rivers; having to cross the rivers. I think most of the kids who died in the rivers. I saw many of my friends…down.

I didn't know where I was going; none of us did. If I hadn't found food here, I would have kept on going.

But here there was food. No one was chasing us. The elders told us that here, no one would kill us.

這裡有一則新聞：在內戰中，數千名的孩童孤苦無依，他們的父母都已罹難。他們被迫做出抉擇，也許是被俘虜到北方，或是拼命地向東逃亡到異鄉。
我獨自一人。

我們試著躲藏以免被軍隊發現。一旦被發現，他們就會追捕並且殺害我們。

我不知道要走向何方，我只想要找個沒有敵人的地方。我們不停地奔跑，日復一日， 周而復始!

一天又一天不停奔跑，不知前往何處。
我所懼怕的河，必須要渡過的大河。

我害怕這條河，這必須要渡過的河。我想大部份的孩子們都在河水裡死去，我看到許多我的朋友都沉在河裡。
我隻身一人。
我聽見他們在哭，哭出了眼淚，打溼了乾涸的大地。

我不知要走向哪裡，我們沒有人知道。如果在這裡找不到食物，我就必須不斷地走下去。

但是，這裏有食物，也沒有人追趕我們。哥哥姐姐們說，這兒不再有人會殺害我們。
我已渡過了河，踩著沉重的步伐穿過貧瘠的沙漠。
我步履蹣跚，也曾失足跌倒。
穿過了河流，一路跌跌絆絆。
路途艱困難行，
但我聽到擊掌的聲音，
耳邊響起他們的歌唱。

聽那迴音在我靈魂裏盪漾。
