There in the calm of ev’ning,

There in the hours of twilight,

A lark, he is soaring,

ascending above the tranquil water,

blithe and free.

The lark arises into the night,

Piercing through the air with fountain ardour,

repeating the press of hurried notes,

endless are the sounds of glee and splendour.

They linger while ringing the song he is bringing,

impelled by his music,

a trill of ecstasy!

For singing till his heaven fills,

’tis love of earth that he instills,

In whom the millions do rejoice for giving their one spirit a voice,
