Let us now praise famous men

and our fathers that begat us.

Such as did bear rule in their kingdoms,

men renowned for their power,

giving counsel by their understanding, 

and declaring prophecies:

Leaders of the people by their counsel,

and by their knowledge.

 

Such as found out musical tunes,

and recited verses in writing.

All these were honoured in their generation,

and were the glory of their times.

And some there be which have no memorial;

who are perished as though they had never been.

Their bodies are buried in peace but their name liveth for evermore.

 

現在讓我們來讚美名人，

我們的歷代祖先。

在他們之中，有歷代國王，

有大能的勇士，

有聰明的謀士，

有說預言的先知：

作民眾領袖的，有因自己的決策

和自己的明智。

 

詩人作曲家，

有的寫作敘事詩。

在所處的時代裡，他們聲名顯赫，

受到人民的尊敬。

另外一些人，誰也不記得；

彷彿根本沒生過。

他們的身體，長眠安息，他們的聲望，

永世長存。
