The shadows of evening steal over the lea,

As she stands on the hillside and stares out at the sea.

Her hair turned to silver,

A tear in her eye,

Where is love? 

Why has it passed her by?

When she was a young girl of seven or eight,

she would wait every morning inside the garden,

gate and watch the young lad as he went on his way,

young and shy,

knowing not what to say.

 

The children grew and they shared their dream as they walked along the sand.

He longed to sail far across the sea to distant, unknown lands.

Then one summer morning he bid her “goodbye.”

As she whispered, “I love you,” She looked into his eyes.

For one fleeting moment she thought he might stay.

Then the wind carried his boat a way.

 

She watched each night with a silent prayer for her love to come again.

She vowed that she would be waiting there to see his ship come in.
