Down in a deep,
Secluded vale Cuckoo and Nightingale
Once resolved to challenge one another:
“We’re rivals in the art of song:
To whom then should the prize belong?
Let us compete together!”
Cuckoo!
The Cuckoo said:
“We’re both agreed,
So now a judge we’ll need;
Our neighbor the Donkey I favour.
For since he has two great big ears,
He’s sure to mark well what he hears,
And faulty notes discover!”
Heehaw!
They quickly found their learned friend,
Who said, “I’ll my assistance lend;
In fact, I’ll do it gladly.”
The nightingale trilled high and clear;
The Donkey spoke:
“What do I hear?
Heehaw!
My head is spinning madly!”
Then in his turn the Cuckoo sang,
And thirds and fourths together rang.
The Donkey, ravished, called out,
Stop!
Both listen to my verdict!
You warble sweetly,
Nightingale,
But Cuckoo’s two notes cannot fail:
He keeps the beat securely!
Now, with my powerful intellect,
He is the one that I select,
He has the prize most surely!”

在深處，
僻靜的穀倉，杜鵑和夜鶯
有一次決定互相挑戰：
「我們是歌曲藝術的競爭對手：
那個獎項應該歸誰所有？
讓我們一起競爭！」
咕咕！
杜鵑說：

停！
你們兩個聽我的判決！
你甜言蜜語，
夜鶯，
但是杜鵑的兩個音符不能唱壞：
他無疑有保持節拍！
現在，憑藉我強大的智慧，
我選他，
他會得獎無庸置疑！」
