1976年到1980年間，哈維的兒子曾在溫徹斯特大教堂合唱團中，作曲家也參與合唱團的排練，以及這座近千年歷史的教堂每週的禮拜頌讚。合唱的聲響、建築本身的特殊回聲、以及基督教禮拜的洗滌，促使作曲家在1976年創作了這首讚美詩，獻給教堂合唱團及音樂總監Martin Neary。

 

歌詞選自舊約聖經，描述人們遇到患難愁苦，期望上主將恩典賜予大眾，拯救人們。全曲有固定的旋律不斷出現，以及G大調和弦堅定的貫穿，表達即使在無窮的痛苦煩悶中，靈魂對上主的信仰是如何克服萬難，以至充滿喜樂。
