美國作曲家佛斯特（Stephen Foster, 1826-1864）創作了許多膾炙人口的美國民謠。1854年佛斯特為妻子珍妮寫下了這首動聽的歌曲「棕髮珍妮」，只可惜後來珍妮在他貧病交加時離他而去，空留令人惋惜、惆悵的歌聲獨自低吟。

美國當代合唱教育家帕克與羅伯特（Alice Parker & Robert Shaw）將此結構單純（A A' B A''）曲調優美的歌曲，改編成無伴奏混聲四部合唱曲。全曲共有兩大段，透過男女聲部之間複音形式的交織對唱，與女高音、男高音聲部分別擔任主旋律演唱的音色變化，來描繪出佛斯特年少時追求少女珍妮的喜悅，對當時以為其妻子珍妮的愛慕，以及面對那時自己在創作上遭遇瓶頸的憂愁之情。
