艾爾加（Edward Elgar, 1857-1934）是英國在後期浪漫樂派中最偉大的作曲家，他同時也是管風琴、小提琴及指揮家，其作品充滿著獨特的曲調韻味，不但優美且受人喜愛。艾爾加於1890年採用英格蘭詩人安德魯‧隆（Andrew Lang, 1844-1912）的詩作《傳奇小說》，來譜寫這首無伴奏混聲四部合唱曲，歌詞內容是在描寫詩中的男主角在人生旅程中，所遭遇到的冒險、愛情、別離等故事。

全曲共分為ABA'三個段落，第一段以沉靜的小調風格，敘述愛人所居之地的美麗景緻，第二段音樂轉為較明朗的大調風格，緩緩道出與愛人相伴賞月的幸福往事。反覆的第三段中，融合了前兩段的曲調動機，並在結束樂句時以緩慢的速度與極弱的力度，悵然地表達出對這段已消逝戀情的感嘆。
