their bright and patterned necks,                
and sank, oil-girdled                         
in the black and tarnished sea.                  
The humpback whales, the orcas wrote Cetacean history.
Their underwater songs rang plunder--            
the scraped dead space behind the factory ships;

greater than man, greater than whales:

萳西特爾芙(Nancy Telfer)，加拿大作曲家，於西安大略大學接受正規教育，修習音樂教育、作曲、鋼琴和聲樂；現為全職作曲家。從1979年起，她創作了超過180件作品，範圍從為初學者的簡短小品到為技術成熟的音樂家都有，包括有為獨奏、室內樂、交響樂團、合唱團及管樂隊的作品。她已為許多優秀音樂家委託創作，作品也在世界各地廣泛地演出及流傳。除了是位作曲家，她也常常出現在加拿大和美國的研討會。
在加拿大詩人芭芭拉鮑伊斯(Barbara Powis)具有強烈生物學的描繪中，海豚，蒼鷺，座頭鯨和殺人鯨都佔了一個地位。在此首優秀的作品中，尖銳不協和的叫喊與喃喃低語形成對比，長的弧形旋律以無拘束而輕鬆的形態脫穎而出，和那富想像力的伴奏型成對比。
