出生於紐約的柯普蘭(Aaron Copland,1900-1990)，在1920-24年間，前往巴黎近郊的楓丹白露，跟隨法國著名音樂教育家那迪亞‧布朗惹（Nadia Boulanger）學習，成為二十世紀美國音樂家前往法國取經的「先鋒」代表；受到布朗惹的啟發，柯普蘭承襲了歐洲當紅的「新古典主義」音樂思潮，將具有美國民族特色的素材，放入音樂創作中，展現出明晰、清澈、簡約的音樂架構。
柯普蘭的創作涵蓋了器樂、聲樂、舞劇、電影配樂…等多樣範疇，《比利小子》、《阿帕拉契之春》等傳世名作中，都帶有明顯地美國民族色彩，他一生榮獲多種獎項，如普立茲獎、紐約評論獎、奧斯卡金像獎，及耶魯大學Howland獎等。

〈船伕之舞〉改編自1843年的吟遊歌曲，由男中音擔任敘述故事的獨白，合唱團則扮演群眾的角色。本曲運用速度、聲部的變換，來呈現每一段不同的敘事歌詞，極富喜感與戲劇張力。描述船伕的場景，充分展現出美國早期市井生活，快速而跳躍的音符，也鮮明地傳達美國人樂天的個性。
