這首黑人靈歌源自Holl Johnson(1887-1970)所編曲的「黑人靈歌集30選」，是聖誕節的福音歌曲，輕快簡單的主旋律先是小組對唱，再由男女對唱帶出趣味。
黑人靈歌(Negro Spiritual)是黑奴所唱的一種宗教氣息濃厚的歌謠，以美國音樂為基礎，融合基督教的教義和讚美歌的要素，南北戰爭以後流傳全美大陸，才稱為「黑人靈歌」。黑人靈歌性格單純，通常伴隨某種身體的動作，本身沒有所謂的聽眾存在，每一個人都定歌唱的參與者，後來黑人靈歌走向舞台，由音樂會歌手演唱，才有樂器伴奏的必要。黑人靈歌的歌詞常是黑人的方言，與正統英文的發音和語法不同。
