許多耳熟能詳的聖誕歌曲，我們每年在聖誕節好像都唱得很理所當然，卻從來沒有想過它是如何被創作出來的？探尋熟悉旋律背後的故事是一件有趣的事，或傳奇、或意外，總叫人更認識音樂不僅僅是歌詞與旋律，還有更具意義的歷史、文化等深刻意涵。

Silent Night平安夜  

西元1818年聖誕節的前一天，奧地利阿爾卑斯山區Oberndorf村的教堂風琴被老鼠咬壞了，主持教士Joseph Mohr眼看無法舉行盛大的聖樂禮拜，心裡懊惱明晚該如何帶領會眾一同慶祝基督的降生？滿懷失望的他，在白雪紛飛的夜色中，看著皎潔月光投射在銀色大地上，心裡充滿感恩，想起一千多年前，耶穌誕生的時候，也有一樣的月色、一樣的雪景，一樣沒有風琴的伴奏；但天使卻在空中唱出哈利路亞，告訴世人：救主在今夜已經降生了！

 

突然，一個意念進入他腦海。回家後，心靈充滿平安與感恩的Mohr教士，立刻寫下〈Silent  Night〉這首歌。

第二天一早，他趕往鄰村請音樂家Franz Gruber為這首歌譜曲，短短幾個小時，這首後來傳唱近千年的〈平安夜〉就此誕生了。你知道當聖誕夜教堂詩班唱出這首詩歌時發生了什麼事？全體在場的村民以潮水般的掌聲表達他們說不出來的喜樂與安詳，並沒有人注意到為什麼沒有風琴伴奏！

 

在教會中，從聖誕節12月25日開始到1月6日耶穌顯靈日的12天是很特別的日子。12是個特別的數字，因為一年有12個月，基督有12個門徒，而聖誕節到耶穌顯靈也是12天。除此之外，12還有一個特別的意義，在揭曉此謎底之前讓我們先認識這首輕快歡樂的曲子。

這首歌起源於16世紀，教會人士為了要傳頌教義而不被當權者壓迫（1558 ~1829年天主教被禁止），才寫了這首歌。其實，12個密碼，原文的一些名詞有宗教的意義，現在就讓我們比較一下：

True love指上帝，me指受過洗的人。

1. The partridge in a pear tree 即代表耶穌。

2. Turtle Doves＝The Old and New Testaments新舊約聖經。

3. French Hens＝Faith, Hope and Charity，即信、望、愛。

4. Calling Birds＝the Four Gospels四福音書，或是the Four Evangelists四福音作者：Matthew（馬太）、Mark（馬可）、Luke（路加）和John（約翰）。

5.Golden Rings＝The first Five Books of the Old Testament, the“Pentateuch”, which gives the history of manﾕs fall from grace. Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy.舊約聖經的開首五卷書，又稱摩西五經。

6. Geese A-laying＝the six days of creation創世紀的六天。

7. Swans A-swimming＝the seven sacraments of the Holy Spirit Sacraments. A Sacrament is an outward sign instituted by Christ to give grace.屬於聖靈的七個聖禮。The Sacraments是指 Baptism, Confirmation, Penance, Euharist, Matrimony, Holy Orders and Anointing of the Sick.

8. Maids A-milking＝the eight beatitudes八種福氣，耶穌登山寶訓所教導的八福。

9. Ladies Dancing＝the nine Fruits of the Holy Spirit.聖靈所結的九種果子：仁愛、喜樂、和平、忍耐、恩慈、良善、信實、溫柔、節制。

10. Lords A-leaping＝the ten commandments十誡。

11. Pipers Piping＝the eleven faithful apostles 十一個忠心門徒：Simon（西門彼得）、Andrew（安得烈）、James（雅各，西庇太之子）、John（約翰）、Philip（腓力）、Bartholomew（巴多羅買）、Thomas（多馬）、Matthew（馬太）、James（雅各，亞勒腓之子）、Thaddaeus（達太）和 Simon the Zealot（奮銳黨員西門）。

12. Drummers Drumming＝the twelve points of doctrine in the Apostle's Creed 十二個使徒的教條與宣言。

　　在了解「12」的宗教意義之後，相信我們對於此首聖誕歌會有更深一層的認識，也更能唱出表面字義所隱含的真正深意。

 

這首英國傳統的聖誕歌曲源自於西元1833年，旋律如同童謠般簡易，流暢的6/8拍，甚至有人還把此作品比擬為弱起拍子的英國民謠〈Greensleeves〉（綠袖子），由此可知〈I saw three ships〉是何等著名了！

　　這首歌的歌詞「sail to Bethlehem」非常有意思，就一般而言，我們是不能航行到伯利恆的，但歌詞為何卻如是說呢？這有兩個傳說故事，一是指三位智者親訪聖嬰耶穌後，搭船從聖地君士坦丁堡到米蘭，最後回科隆。二是源自14世紀的德國聖誕歌謠，敘述耶穌是搭船降臨的，而「三」的數字是指三位一體。與這首歌相似的旋律〈There lived a man in Babylon〉由Toby Belch在莎士比亞的〈第十二夜〉中演唱，而現在所流傳的旋律是由William Sandys所出版。

聖誕故事總是充滿著神秘傳奇，如同「三」這個數字，它是三位一體，它是三位智者，它更是神聖與完美！
