英國作曲家威廉斯（Vaughan Williams, 1872-1958）的音樂創作非常多元，包含交響樂曲、室內樂曲、歌劇、合唱歌曲，以及電影配樂等。他致力於英國民間歌曲與歌謠的採集，並於1904年開始以許多民歌曲調來編寫《英國讚美詩歌集》，此詩歌集如今成為英國教堂最具影響力的音樂之一。

《綠袖子》為十六世紀開始流傳於英格蘭的敘事民謠，其歌詞在描述一位國王愛上平民女子的故事。威廉斯於1911年將本曲調改編為無伴奏混聲四部合唱曲，全曲可分為兩個樂段，由男高音聲部與女高音聲部輪流擔任主要曲調的演唱，其他聲部則以主音和聲的形式，在小調與大調聲響的交替轉換、級進起伏與相互交織的曲調線條，以及平緩脈動的複拍子節奏之中，悠悠的吐露出心中對情人深切的愛意與思念。
